In a shocking and unacceptable act, Morocco, the host nation of the Africa Cup of Nations, has detained Algerian fan Rhouf during one of the tournament’s matches, simply for posting a humorous video on social media. The video contained no violence or real offense—it was merely a harmless, comedic expression of fan enthusiasm. Yet, Rhouf was arrested without any clear legal justification and remains in custody.

This incident highlights the ongoing violations against Algerian supporters and their national team throughout the tournament. It also exposes the disgraceful role of the host nation and certain local media outlets, which shamelessly spread false accusations against fans and the national team, politicizing football and tarnishing Algeria’s image abroad.

The actions of the host country constitute a blatant violation of international sporting laws, placing CAF and FIFA in direct responsibility. Will the international federations remain silent in the face of these abuses, or will they intervene immediately to protect fans and hold the host nation accountable for any threats to their safety and rights?

Football is not a stage for defamation or politics. Preventing fans from expressing their joy—even through harmless humor—violates the very essence of the sport. CAF and FIFA are now called upon to take a decisive and clear stance, ensuring that such a sporting and human rights scandal does not happen again.
